Bridgeport officials say the city is getting nearly $3 million in federal money to hire more firefighters.
They say it will pay the salaries of 17 new fire recruits for two years.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal says the money will help the department become fully staffed.
"This new manpower will enable the firefighters on the job now as well as the new recruits to do a better job and help each other with the manpower that's needed to make Bridgeport safer," he says.
Officials say the new class of fire recruits will start orientation and training later this month.
