The Bridgeport Board of Education confirmed today members have voted to rename Columbus Day on the school's official calendar, but not the name originally proposed.
Members had voted last month to call the holiday Indigenous People's Day to reflect the changing attitudes toward Columbus' role in history.
However, local Italian-American groups accused the board of trying to rewrite history.
Last night, board officials decided to change Columbus Day to Italian-American Day.
