A Bridgeport woman who is originally from Haiti is collecting supplies Saturday for the hurricane relief effort in her homeland.
Naomi Trofort began collecting relief supplies after Hurricane Matthew leveled parts of her homeland earlier this month.
The nonprofit group Helping Hands Outreach has been gathering food and clothing from across the greater Bridgeport area.
Organizer April Barron says she decided to take action after she saw the heartbreaking images of people suffering in the wake of the hurricane.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal was among the volunteers at Helping Hands Outreach on Bunnell Street.
The donated supplies will be transported to a holding facility and then shipped to Haiti.
