A Bridgeport woman is calling on the state to suspend a program requiring ex-felons to reimburse the prison system for the cost of their incarceration.
Tonya Barr says due to extraordinary hardships created by the pandemic, state lawmakers should stop the program for at least one year.
The program allows state prison officials to seize a portion of "windfall income," such as lottery winnings or lawsuit settlements from former inmates.
Barr says she is lobbying state lawmakers to suspend the program, but concedes it will be an uphill battle.
State prison officials declined to comment.
