The city of Bridgeport has its own Girl Scout Troop for the first time.
Troop 30156 is the newest troop in the neighborhood. It has over 20 girls. For them, it's more than just putting on the uniform - it's a sisterhood.
"It means a lot to me because I personally don’t have anybody younger than me. My siblings are older than me, so it lets me kind of like a big sister to these girls, and it teaches me that even though they may not actually be your sister, they'll always still be there for me," said Mahogany Bouzi, a cadet in the troop.
Their troop leader, Donielle Walker, used to be a Girl Scout, too. Now, her daughter is part of Troop 30156.
"I want girls to be more active, outside playing. I want them to know about entrepreneurship, about life skills, that I see we don’t learn so much of now," Walker said.
This week, the troop is selling cookies at several locations in Bridgeport, including polling locations on Election Day and local businesses. Aside from their famous cookie flavors, the Girl Scouts of Connecticut also unveiled Exploremores, its newest flavor.
The money collected from selling the cookies will go toward educational trips and giving back to seniors in the community.
"We’re giving cozy socks to seniors. We’re also going to be baking with them, as well as coloring and making Christmas ornaments with the seniors in Bridgeport. So, supporting the cookies is helping us support our community," Walker said.
The troop is looking for leaders and volunteers to join them.
"I love that it can teach you leadership, and it lets me be a role model for these girls," Bouzi said.
Troop 30156 will visit a couple more locations in Bridgeport until Nov. 9. On Friday, the troop will have a drive-thru cookie booth from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Bridgeport YMCA. On Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the troop will be at the Stop & Shop on Main Street.
