A retired Bridgeport police officer says he's been living without heat for the past two months.

Hector Jimenez, 82, who lives on Connecticut Avenue in Bridgeport, says “nobody has come to fix” his radiator.

“It’s freezing in my apartment at night,” he told News 12. “I've been using my stove, even though I know it's dangerous, as a heat source.”

News 12 contacted Jimenez's property manager, who issued a statement.

"We are diligently working on repairs and expect to have Mr. Jimenez's radiator fixed shortly. We are also working on a way of reimbursing him for the portion of his utility bills that are elevated due to the outage," the statement said.

Jimenez says his elevated utility bills are due to his use of space heaters and his gas stove. The Bridgeport Fire Department says it's "monitoring the situation as a matter of public safety."

Chief Lance Edwards urged residents never to use a stove as a heat source.

"That can lead to a fire or deadly carbon monoxide poisoning," he said.

The Bridgeport Fire Department also reminds residents that they'll install free smoke detectors at no charge.
