City and state officials have announced a resolution to help Bronx residents get access to cleaner air.

State Assemblyman Marcos Crespo and his colleagues are calling on building owners and managers to replace their heating systems with cleaner fuel.

The Bronx has one of the highest rates of asthma in the city. Officials say part of the reason is because thousands of buildings in the borough are using heating fuels that are harmful to breathe.

After June 30, 2015, city buildings will no longer be able to use No. 4 or No. 6 heating oils, which emit harmful substances into the air. Buildings will be required to switch to No. 2 heating oil, which is a cleaner fuel.

The initiative is part of the city's PlaNYC program to reduce carbon emissions in the air by 30 percent by the year 2030.

Crespo and his colleagues will be working with Bronx building owners between now and June to address the issues.
