A Bronx native became the face of a new citywide campaign Monday focused on fighting gender identity discrimination.
Alisha King, a full-time mom, and Charlie Solidum, a health care professional from Brooklyn, will be representing the new campaign by the New York City Commission on Human Rights. Both are transgender.
It has been illegal in New York City to discriminate against an individual based on their gender identity or expression since 2002. This includes denying access to bathrooms.
The campaign is aimed at supporting New Yorkers' right to use the bathroom consistent with their gender identity, regardless of their assigned gender at birth.
The ads read, "Look past the pink and blue, use the restroom consistent with you," and will appear in subway cars, bus stops, phone booths, NYC TV, newspapers and on social media. In addition, organizers created the hashtag #BeYouNYC to help spread the word.
Officials say it marks the nation's first government-led, citywide ad campaign of its kind.
