Gov. Jodi Rell and other leaders were in Southport Friday to cut the ribbon at the reopening of the Southport train station.

The station was rebuilt after a fire last January. More than 75 percent of the structure was destroyed in the blaze, including an art gallery located at the station.

The renovations were finished in less than a year at a cost of approximately $2.5 million.

"Everyone thought this historic building was totally lost," state Sen. John McKinney said at the ceremony. McKinney and Rell credited the Department of Transportation for finishing the project under time and on budget.

A restored indoor waiting area is expected to be opened to the public in the near future once the station is fully insured.
