CEO of Bridgeport nonprofit makes 'emergency appeal' to governor to reactivate severe cold weather protocol

John Hamilton, the CEO of Bridgeport's Liberation Programs, made an "emergency appeal" to Gov. Ned Lamont Friday night to reactivate Connecticut's severe cold weather protocol amid freezing temperatures.
The purpose of the protocol is to ensure the state's most vulnerable populations receive protection from the elements through special measures, which may include extended shelter access - and even hotel rooms.
"A man served by our organization froze to death outside last night in a neighboring community, after having been turned away from a shelter - and that tragedy was 100% preventable," Hamilton said.
"It can make the difference between life and death," he said.
Hamilton says he contacted the governor's office Friday night.
It was not immediately clear if the governor intended to act upon Hamilton's request.
