A City Island resident is joining a worldwide movement to promote literacy in the Bronx.

Jennie Salgado says her lifelong passion for reading sparked her interest in the Little Free Library concept.

She created a three-shelved bookcase to be a part of the Little Free Library's Take a Book, Return a Book free book exchange movement.

Salgado says she will be giving her library to the Eastchester Center for Cancer Care on City Island, where her son Victor received treatment for lymphoma and her husband Raul is currently receiving treatment for prostate cancer. 

"Reading is a positive thing for healing, all the way around, not only when you're sick, but in every aspect of life," says Salgado.

The library is the first of its kind in the Bronx, and it is expected to open in the infusion room in the cancer center within the next couple of weeks.
