What to expect

• Dangerous heat and humidity continue Tuesday and Wednesday, with the hottest temperatures expected Wednesday.

• Gusty southwest winds Tuesday may reach 20 to 30 mph, especially near the coast.

• An isolated shower or thunderstorm is possible Wednesday evening as a weak cold front moves through.

• Thursday and Friday remain warm, but humidity and heat levels ease somewhat.

• A frontal system increases the chance for showers and thunderstorms over the weekend.

• Brief minor coastal flooding remains possible around this evening's high tide in the most vulnerable shoreline locations. There is also a high risk of rip currents at ocean beaches Tuesday afternoon and evening.

  – In effect from 11 a.m. Tuesday through 8 p.m. Wednesday for New York City. Heat index values will range from the upper 90s to around 102 degrees. Limit strenuous outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable individuals.

• Coastal flood statement

  – In effect around this evening's high tide cycle for the most vulnerable shoreline locations. Minor flooding of low-lying roads, parking lots, and shoreline areas is possible.

• High risk of rip currents

  – Expected Tuesday afternoon and evening at Atlantic-facing beaches. Dangerous surf conditions are expected, and entering the ocean is strongly discouraged.
