In an exclusive interview with News 12 Connecticut, state Representative Don Clemons (D-124th District) says he kept quiet after witnessesing former state Senator Ernie Newton try to extort money.
Clemons said the incident, which took place three years ago, involved Newton trying to extort a non-profit organization. He said he regrets not reporting the attempt to authorities, and that his actions were influenced by his position as a new legislator.
"I just felt it wasn't my place at the time, I wish I did maybe now in retrospect," said Clemons.
State Republicans are calling for an investigation. Clemons is considering running for the office of Bridgeport mayor. He said he hopes voters consider his entire legislative record in the future, not just the Newton incident.
