Community members are rallying around the family of a Danbury mother who police say was killed in her home with her children there.
Police responded to Sherrie Blount's apartment on South Street in Danbury Saturday afternoon and found the 31-year-old shot to death. They say all of her children and their father were home at the time.
Police have released few details of their active investigation, but say they do not believe there is any danger to the public.
Devyn Taylor is the godmother to Blount's four children and is now temporarily caring for two of them. She says she met Blount at age 14 and that the two were still inseparable nearly two decades later.
Taylor created a GoFundMe page to raise funds to support Blount's children -- ages 10 months and 5, 7 and 8 years -- and pay for her funeral expenses. She says many people have already donated, in part because of how Blount touched the lives of others.
Blount worked as a teacher's aide for children with special needs at Danbury Public Schools.
Taylor adds that Blount was funny, outgoing and the type of person around whom everyone wanted to be.
