Connecticut is the leading state in the nation for new housing permits, according to a newly released report from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Gov. Ned Lamont announced the news at a construction site in Bridgeport, where the former Waltersville School is being transformed into affordable housing units. It's new name will be Waltersville Commons.

"More housing will bring down the cost. More affordable housing brings down the cost. More supportive housing brings down the cost and that's what we're doing here in the state of Connecticut," Lamont said.

There will be 70 units in the affordable and newly renovated building.

"The affordability goes for those residents that are making between $25,000 for family of four, all the way up to $80,000," said Seila Mosquera-Bruno, Connecticut Housing Commissioner.

Construction is expected to finish by the summer of 2027.
