Workers at service plazas across Connecticut have reached a major milestone. Fast food employees at highway rest stops have officially voted to join a union.
This is a move leaders say is the first of its kind for fast food workers anywhere in the state.
The Local 32BJ will now represent employees from Dunkin’, Panera Bread and Starbucks at all 23 service plazas in Connecticut.
The newly unionized workers join building and maintenance staff at the plazas, who were already part of the union.
Union leaders say the vote follows a six-year effort by workers pushing for a stronger voice on the job. With union representation, employees will now be able to negotiate key issues like work conditions and benefits.
Organizers say the vote is a historic step for fast food workers in Connecticut.
