A college football player whose family is from Stratford says he's very proud to have been ranked the No. 1 running back in the U.S.
Jaden Shirden, 20, is a sophomore at Monmouth University in New Jersey and is currently ranked as the best college football running back in the country.
News 12's Frank Recchia asked his coaching staff to describe Shirden in one word, and they said explosive.
"That's a true statement," said Shirden. "They call me the home run hitter, you know, I get the ball and I can take it anywhere on football field."
As a high school football player at Saint Joe's in Trumbull, Shirden led his team to three state titles and nabbed 107 career touchdowns.
"It's been nothing but a blessing. I'm very grateful for all the success that I have," Shirden said.
As Shirden gets ready to head back to Monmouth, he says he's grateful to the coaching staff, his fellow players, and above all, his family and his faith.
He says he just wants to stay grounded, focused and humble so he doesn't lose it all.
"My job is just to get ready and just keep doing what I'm doing and let God do his thing," said Shirden.
Shirden says he's one of three finalists up for the prestigious Walter Payton Award. The winner will be announced on Jan. 7.
