A superior court judge ruled on Wednesday that the state's education funding system is irrational and unconstitutional.
The ruling is part of an 11-year-old lawsuit filed by parents who claimed the current system puts poor and urban districts at an unfair disadvantage.
The judge ruled the state must overhaul its education system and come up with a new funding formula in 180 days. However, the case is first expected to be appealed all the way to the state Supreme Court.
Earl Kim, the superintendent of Stamford Public Schools, says he's pleased with the judge's ruling.
Kim says students in Stamford are not offered all of the programs they would need to achieve the level of success set by the state. He also says some urban areas that have greater needs for students tend to be areas with less of a tax base, meaning they would be taxed higher. Some see this as unfair.
Kim says he hopes reviewing the formula translates into additional dollars for Stamford students. He also thinks there should be a review of how federal dollars are spent.
