Dozens of firefighters battled a fire at City Carting & Recycling Company in Stamford.
The fire broke out at the Taylor Reed Place building around 3:15 a.m. at the transfer station where the garbage is disposed.
The deputy chief says the facility is open 24 hours, with garbage truck drivers coming and going, but no workers were inside the transfer station when the fire broke out.
About 40 firefighters were on the scene at one point to knock down the flames.
Officials say crews were able to contain the fire in about a half hour, so it didn't spread to any other buildings or equipment.
No injuries were reported, and the fire marshal is investigating the cause.
