A Crown Heights resident says he's been living with a leaking hole in his apartment ceiling for nearly a year and this week’s storm pushed the situation to a breaking point.
Taylor Nathe says the hole in his kitchen ceiling has been steadily worsening since 2024.
“You can see on Feb.12, the leak is worsening down my wall now,” Nathe said, pointing to video footage showing water dripping from the ceiling.
His first video message, to the super, dates back to November 2024.
Nathe claims his landlord and building superintendent initially attempted to cover the damage with paint, but the leak persisted. Eventually, he says, they stopped responding altogether.
After Monday’s storm, Nathe woke up to what he described as a “disaster.”
“At 6:32 in the morning, I walk in and there's a big old hole that wasn’t there before,” he said. “Flipped on the lights and just saw debris on the ground, brown water everywhere.”
Frustrated and concerned for his safety, Nathe contacted News 12, who took action, reaching out to the landlord and encouraging Nathe to file a 311 complaint with the Department of Housing and Public Development.
“She called me right away. She was upset I contacted the city,” Nathe said. “But what else can I do after a year of complaining?”
Nathe says the landlord is now seeking contractors to repair the damage. One contractor visited the apartment on Thursday, but the landlord reportedly balked at the quoted price.
“She said it was too high,” Nathe said. “But I pay rent, my job is to pay rent, it's her job to pay for this, I'm losing my patience after a year of this.”
Nathe worries that another rainstorm could cause the ceiling to collapse entirely, posing a danger to himself and his pets.
“If we get one more rainstorm, this is coming down,” he said. “It’s not safe. My job is to pay rent. Hers is to maintain the building.”
News 12 Brooklyn reached out to the landlord for comment but has not received a response.
For now, Nathe continues to wait, hoping the next storm doesn’t bring more damage.
