Drivers who have been stuck in traffic lately might be wondering why there's still congestion while there's a stay-at-home order in place.

The answer is road work.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation says it has expanded almost all nighttime projects to the daytime. The agency says it's quicker, safer and cheaper -- and right now is the time to do it.

On some projects, the state uses "Smart Work Zones" to get real-time traffic data. That way, crews can make adjustments to keep cars moving.

"'Smart Work Zones' actually allow us to actually get real-time traffic data, as far as vehicle counts. So we were seeing some projects drop to as much as a thousand vehicles per hour," explains state DOT Construction Administrator John Dunham.

Crews are fixing the Yankee Doodle Bridge.

In addition to Norwalk, drivers should expect big delays on I-95 North in Stamford as well as the Waterbury Mixmaster and the Charter Oak Bridge in East Hartford.

The DOT says speeding is the biggest problem that is putting road workers in danger.
