Connecticut Secretary of the State Denise Merrill announced she won't run for reelection in 2022.
Merril says she will work on a campaign to pass an early voting amendment in 2022 and an absentee ballot amendment in 2024.
"I am not retiring. There is too much work left to be done," she says.
Merril says she's making this announcement now to give other candidates a chance to organize.
She says the biggest challenge for whoever follows her will be replacing decades-old voting tabulators.
Merrill has served three terms in the position.
She highlighted progress that has been made in the state, including modernizing Connecticut's election system.
