A Danbury man was killed after his vehicle rolled forward and struck him in Newtown Thursday, police say.
It happened on Hawleyville Road near Old Hawleyville Road and adjacent to the I-84 Exit 9 westbound off-ramp at 6:15 p.m.
Police 62-year-old Valdemir Santana was operating a commercial vehicle heading north on Hawleyville Road when he stopped and exited the vehicle on the northbound shoulder of the road.
The vehicle then rolled forward, struck and killed Santana.
Police say the vehicle came to a stop near the Exit 9 commuter lot
When first responders arrived, they found bystanders who had begun performing lifesaving measures on Santana, who was lying in the shoulder of the road.
Santana died at the scene.
Police say there is no reason to believe any other vehicles were involved in the accident.
Anyone who may have seen the vehicle parked on the side of the road in front of the Papa Al's shopping center around that time is asked to call police at 203-426-5841.
Hawleyville Road was closed while police investigated but has since reopened.
