New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the Bronx could finally be getting its own full-service animal shelter.
De Blasio's announcement included $10 million in funds for shelters in the Bronx and Queens. It is the largest New York City shelter investment since the 1990s.
The Bronx and Queens have both been without full-service shelters, and the closest location for Bronx residents was in Manhattan, the main site of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
City officials say that there are hundreds of stray cats and dogs currently inhabiting the Bronx.
The Bronx's last shelter closed in the 1970s, and was eventually demolished.
