A deal reached at the state capitol will temporarily help southwestern Connecticut hospitals and social service agencies.
State lawmakers closed a $220 million budget shortfall Tuesday to help avoid major funding cuts.
"There was a lot of talk about cutting hospitals," said state Rep. Brendan Sharkey. "That's not in this package. There was discussion about cutting municipal aid. That is not in this package."
In the next six weeks, lawmakers will have to face a nearly $1 billion shortfall for the next budget year.
Even if state workers agree to more concessions, Gov. Dannel Malloy has said layoffs will be unavoidable.
The state could also see major cuts to Medicaid, mental health and help for the disabled.
