DEC extends Three Mile Harbor shellfish closure through the weekend

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced that shellfish harvesting in Three Mile Harbor will remain temporarily closed through the annual Clamshell Foundation Fireworks Show due to water quality concerns following heavy rainfall.
The closure began on July 7 after heavy rain and flooding from July 5-6 created conditions that could make shellfish unsafe for consumption. DEC said the closure will remain in effect throughout the upcoming Clamshell Foundation Fireworks Show on Saturday, July 11, and until water quality testing confirms the area is safe to reopen.
The annual fireworks show draws hundreds of recreational boaters to Three Mile Harbor. DEC routinely closes local shellfish beds during the event because increased boat traffic can raise the risk of contamination from marine sanitation systems.
