Some disabled residents say a chronically broken elevator at a Bridgeport apartment complex has left them basically trapped in their homes.

Filipe Bermudes is a disabled resident who lives in Building 2 of the Green Homes apartment complex. The 54-year-old says many time he has to cancel medical appointments because he can’t go down the stairs.

Bermudes, along with other disabled residents like Renaldo Tanorio who is blind, met with Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Mayor Joe Ganim Sunday to say they've been trapped on their floor since Wednesday when the elevator broke down.

After News 12 Connecticut reported the situation to housing officials, a maintenance representative showed up and vowed to immediately fix the problem.

Ganim said the bigger problem is Green Homes itself, which critics say is old, depressingly institutional, foul-smelling and begging to be torn down.

"I've been to Washington. We're going to look to a plan that hopefully can have the support of everyone in Washington to create a better location like we've done with Crescent Crossing,” says Ganim.

Blumenthal says he'll be searching for federal funding to help replace Green Homes soon with modern housing.

"I look forward to working with the mayor on this vision and this plan for rebuilding this entire complex,” says Blumenthal.
