Representatives from hospitals and health centers warned Friday that there could be dire consequences for patients if the federal government makes cuts to Medicaid funding.
The new Republican budget directs the committee overseeing Medicaid to find $800 billion in savings.
"When I hear about my patients not being able to potentially afford their COPD inhalers, not being able to afford their insulin. To think of them struggling to breathe because they can't afford to treat their chronic medical conditions, it's a tragedy," says Dr. Josh Jones of Wheeler Health.
Wheeler Health is a nonprofit community-based federally qualified health center that provides various services to people at six locations across the state.
A new report from the Urban Institute has found that if cuts are made to Medicaid, the state's share would have to increase by 23% to make up for the loss.
