The state Department of Transportation has finalized plans to rebuild the I-95 Fairfield Avenue overpass.

The bridge had to be torn down after a tanker truck caught fire directly underneath it in early May.

Traffic on the highway was shut down for days while the bridge was removed.

Crews finished taking down the center pilling on Thursday. It was all that remained of the old structure.

“We had to take that center bridge pier out just because we're going to make sure it's up to the current federal and state guidelines,” said DOT director of communications Josh Morgan.

The new bridge will largely be the same as the old one, with slightly narrower travel lanes to allow for more space for bicycle traffic on the shoulders, according to the DOT.

Morgan says construction on the new bridge is expected to last into next spring.
