Bridgeport police are asking for the public's help after a drive-by shooting damaged a car parked in front of the headquarters of Bridgeport mayoral hopeful Joe Ganim.
Police say eight to 10 shots were fired, and one of those shots shattered the window of a parked car.
Ganim, the winner of the Democratic mayoral primary, tells News 12 Connecticut that he was on the other side of the city when his staff members heard the gunshots and ran outside.
He says the car belonged to a member of his campaign, but he does not believe the car or the staffer were targeted.
Police say an officer on patrol happened to be in the area, heard the shots and responded.
Ganim says there have been many cases of shots fired in the neighborhood over the past few weeks.
Independent mayoral candidate Mary-Jane Foster says the way to reduce shootings like this one is to get the most frequent offenders off the street.
"We need to move the city forward by moving our youth forward," says Foster. " When we can offer them additional facilities and additional programming with opportunities for internships and jobs, then we've done our job."
Ganim says the campaign worker who owns the car damaged in the shooting was so shaken by the incident that she had to take the rest of the day off.
