Deerpark police say a Wurtsboro woman has been arrested after allegedly passing a stopped school bus and nearly hitting a child on Route 209.

According to Police Chief Richard Sztyndor, the incident happened on October 31 near H.B.E. Elementary School. Investigators say 53-year-old Tricia-Borrero Orlando drove onto the right shoulder to go around a stopped school bus and came close to striking a child who was approaching the bus. No one was injured.

Orlando was arrested on November 13 and is facing multiple charges, including reckless endangerment in the second degree and endangering the welfare of a child. Police say she’s also charged with reckless driving, speeding in a school zone, failing to reduce speed for conditions, failure to obey a traffic control device, failure to stop for a school bus, and unsafe lane change.

Police allege Orlando was driving in a school zone at a speed higher than the posted limit when she passed the bus.

She was issued appearance tickets for Deerpark Town Court on December 2.

Chief Sztyndor said the department takes school bus violations very seriously, noting that Deerpark has three schools in town. He thanked the Port Jervis School District and We Transport for their cooperation during the investigation.
