A man who allegedly assaulted a police officer during a traffic stop appeared before a judge Thursday.
Luis Rivera, of West Haven, pleaded not guilty and was placed under a $50,000 bond. Authorities said a police officer pulled Rivera over because he was driving recklessly, nearly hitting another vehicle. Rivera only had his registration and didn't have a driver's license or insurance card, according to authorities.
As the officer searched Rivera for weapons on Connair Road, Rivera allegedly spun around and pushed the officer, hitting him in the throat. Rivera also allegedly threatened the officer, saying he'd take him out.
Rivera was arrested, and authorities said the officer found two metal bars in Rivera's car, which were considered to be weapons.
Rivera's attorney said the bars are pieces of machinery that Rivera uses for work.
The police officer in the incident went to a hospital, but was released.
