Those living near Huntington Road in Stratford may have noticed that they had discolored water or no water at all on Tuesday.
A pair of water main breaks affected thousands of customers in town, as well as in Shelton and Trumbull.
“I came to the bottom of Beaver Dam Road, and thought the dam had let go," says Katie Lance, who lives nearby. "Driveways were sinking...There was so much water flowing over the road and under the road that the pavement buckled."
It all happened around noon on Tuesday.
Stratford Mayor David Chess says initially about half of Stratford was without water, but thanks to the quick response from emergency crews, water officials say that number was down to about 50 homes as of 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Aquarion Water Authority says crews will continue working overnight to fix the problem.
“When we have a break as big as the one we had on Huntington Road, there’s a lot of undermining where soil underneath the pavement gets washed out, and that’s where you can have what some might call a sinkhole effect," says George Logan, director of community relations. "We need to make sure we understand the extent of that sinkhole, and how much soil and sediment underneath the road has actually been washed out."
Logan says Huntington Rd. will remain closed to through traffic until at least Wednesday afternoon as crews work to repair the road.
