An Easton mother was sentenced Friday to 10 years in prison for the drowning death of her infant son. Ashby Dickinson's 7-month-old son drowned in a bathtub in 2007. Prosecutors contended that she and a friend were drinking and doing drugs as the baby drowned. They say she left her son at home to find drugs. She then she returned, but never explained why her clothes were wet and her baby was lifeless. They say she was wearing a wet T-shirt the next morning.
Dickinson was tearful and said she was remorseful when she spoke at the sentencing. Her defense attorney had pleaded with the judge to be lenient.
?I think it's a great tragedy and I'm not sure that anything that happens today is going to change that,? the baby?s father Chris Noel Bentley says.
Dickinson has a second child, who has been placed in state foster care. Her sentence will be suspended after two-and-a-half years.
