As an elderly hit-and-run victim clings to life, police are asking for the public's help in finding the driver of the vehicle that left the scene.
Police say a surveillance camera captured the "graphic" incident. Cyril Lennon, 72, was crossing Stratford Avenue near Hollister Avenue at around 8:30 p.m. Monday when a vehicle struck him. Lennon was thrown across the street. Police say the driver stopped briefly before taking off.
The vehicle that struck Lennon is red, has two doors, has a rear spoiler and may have tinted windows. Police believe the vehicle may be a 1990s Pontiac Grand Am or Grand Prix with front-end damage.
Neighbors who heard the crash said they thought two vehicles had collided. "I know for a fact his left leg was broken," said Shaquaysha Murray, who saw the aftermath. "From the knee down was broken in a couple of spots."
Lennon remains in critical condition. Locals are hoping that the suspect who left Lennon lying on the road comes forward.
Local business owners say Lennon, who is from Jamaica, lives close to the accident scene. He isn't married but has children who still live in his native country, according to neighbors who describe the victim as a nice man who kept to himself.
The suspect's car was last seen headed east on Stratford Avenue before turning onto Hewitt Street. Anyone with information about the hit-and-run is asked to called police.
