An elderly woman who sustained burns to most of her body remains in serious condition after her home went up in flames, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
About 90 percent of the bedridden victim's body was burned. She was rescued from her bedroom in the front of the home and taken to Norwalk Hospital.
Fire officials believe that the fire may have started one room over in the living room.
Smoke wafted through the air as firefighters arrived at the Ely Avenue house at 11:20 a.m. Wednesday. About 36 firefighters battled the blaze, and the fire marshal's office says firefighters were at the scene for hours.
Neighbors describe the area as quiet. Many were in disbelief. The severely burned victim's next door neighbor has fond memories of the victim, saying that he has lived on the block for the past 30 years.
State and local investigators are looking into the cause of the fire.
