A local foundation hosted an event Sunday to raise money for breast cancer awareness.
The Get In Touch Foundation, which was started by Milford breast cancer survivor Mary Ann Wasil Nilan, held the event. Nilan, who is the director of Get In Touch, was given 80 wedding dresses by a friend and decided to raffle them to raise money to fund a breast-cancer-awareness campaign among young girls.
Nilan, who is a five-year survivor, says the gowns range in price from about $400 to about $1,000, but tickets to the event were $75. Women who attended kept tally of their favorite dresses and then entered raffles for their shot at winning the dress.
The money raised Sunday will fund the foundation's new program to distribute information to young girls about self breast exams. The initiative will begin in the Milford school district, but hopefully spread to the rest of Connecticut by October.
