Despite churning some 300 miles off of Long Island, Hermine has the potential to cause strong winds, coastal flooding and some power outages in southwestern Connecticut.

Those winds picking up are a concern to Eversource today. The utility company says it is standing by ready with extra crews to help.

Eversource assured customers that because of the drought, it has been working to remove dangerous trees this summer.

"Eversource tree crews have been identifying trees that have been weakened by the severe dry weather and pose an increased threat to the reliability of the electric system," says Eversource officials.

Eversouce is reminding people today to charge all of their electronic devices in case they lose power.

Officials also say after power returns, you should plug in or turn on your appliances one by one so you don't cause a power surge.

Gov. Dannel Malloy held a news conference and cautioned anyone who loses power to be patient.

"Making repairs in high winds is not a safe thing for them to do, so if someone is to lose power and the winds are sustained and are gusting at over 30 mph, in all likelihood repairs will not be made until winds die down again," says Malloy.

The utility company also says people can get outage updates on Eversource's Twitter or Facebook page or by signing up for text alerts.
