The University of New Haven athletic program is getting its biggest donation ever, and the timing couldn't be more perfect.
"I believe in giving back to the university that made me who I am today," said longtime University of New Haven benefactor and alumnus Jeff Hazell.
The University of New Haven is getting a $5 million donation from Hazell for its athletics program. The Athletic Center and basketball court at the school are named after him.
The donation comes as UNH is transitioning from Division II to Division I athletics.
"There's something about competing at the highest level…It's not only good for the athletics department its good for the entire institution," said University of New Haven Athletic Director Devin Crosby.
The success of the Charger sports programs is making this transition easy.
"Athletics is sort of unparalleled in its ability to galvanize school spirit, enthusiasm, brand equity, visibility. You get a Cinderella story. You're the last one in," said University of New Haven President Jens Frederiksen.
Hazell, a former football player at UNH believes in the power of sports.
"I want UNH to continue to grow and graduate students that will succeed and hopefully follow in my leadership," said Hazell.
Division I athletics begin on campus Friday, Aug. 22 when the UNH women's soccer team hosts Brown. In November, the men's basketball team marks its first home game in Division I by hosting Penn State. UNH is competing in the NEC conference.
