An executive order that requires Connecticut residents to wear protective face masks if they are in public will go into effect Monday night.
The executive order states that residents will need to wear a mask in public when they are not able to maintain a social distance of at least 6 feet from others.
Gov. Ned Lamont says residents must wear either a surgical masks or cloth face coverings, and that N95 masks should be reserved for health care workers.
Gov. Lamont says those walking around their neighborhood or open spaces should be prepared to put on a mask if there is the potential to get close to others.
Gov. Lamont also says to wear a mask at the grocery store.
The order also requires people to wear masks when using taxi or ride-sharing services, public transportation, or when waiting at the bus stop.
People who are restricted from wearing masks due to a medical condition are exempt from the order, according to Gov. Lamont and will not have to provide medical documentation to verify.
Children under 2 years old are also not required to wear masks. Children over two don't have to wear masks if parents of guardians cannot put them one on safely.
Lamont also expects retail workers to wear masks.
The order goes into effect at 8 p.m.
