About 7,000 IRS employees are out of a job in the middle of tax season, and that could spell trouble for Connecticut taxpayers.
The layoffs come as the Trump administration continues slashing government personnel across the board.
Experts say while millions of Americans are filing returns now, the effect of the layoffs won't be felt until after tax season.
“Any kind of a cut like this makes me more nervous for taxpayers," says attorney Sara Spodick, of Quinnipiac University School of Law. "While taxpayers may not face additional time if they file electronically, what they may find is if their return has been kicked out and they need to file a paper return, they should expect extensive delays."
To avoid being audited, Attorney Spodick warns taxpayers not to underreport income.
High tax breaks in proportion to income, she says, are also red flags to IRS agents.
“Everyone expects the IRS to be around," Spodick says. "It’ll just be operating on more limited resources."
The layoffs affect probationary employees with roughly one year or less at the IRS.
Earlier this month, workers were told they wouldn’t be allowed to accept a buyout offer from the Trump administration until May.
