Many parents in Fairfield are breathing a collective sigh of relief Friday after police say a bomb threat in the public school district turned out to be a hoax.

About 50 parents stood vigil outside Fairfield Warde High School as district buildings were held in lockdown for hours as authorities investigated.

Inside, students say they huddled in corners and on the floor as teachers told them they were having a drill.

Students and parents hugged one another outside the school once the lockdown was finally lifted.

Many students told News 12 that as they waited, they realized how much they appreciate their parents.

The district canceled all after-school activities Friday, but the superintendent says that programs will resume as normal Saturday, and schools will open on time Monday.
