A mom and pop pharmacy in Fairfield is closing its doors for good after six decades in business.

Customers of Lupe's Drug Store on Black Rock Turnpike were shocked and heartbroken to learn the store will close for good on Wednesday.

Craig Massaro, the owner of Lupe's Drug Store, says his parents started the pharmacy in 1954. Massaro says his dad was 30 years old when he opened the pharmacy and at the age of 94 still comes to work every day.

Robin Benak, of Fairfield, says she's totally devastated. 

Lupe's survived a fire in 1992, but couldn't stay afloat with insurance carriers paying less and demanding more.

"We have to take contracts that are take it or leave it type things," says Massaro. "There's no negotiating."

Massaro says the community has been wonderful to his family.

Customers will have their prescriptions transferred to the CVS store across the street.
