Fairfield's police chief gave an update Wednesday on the investigation into a swatting incident last month.
All 17 Fairfield schools went into lockdown mode and were then dismissed early after someone called in threats to multiple schools on Oct. 23.
Police say the threats were a hoax, known as "swatting," when someone reports a fake emergency to get law enforcement sent to that location.
Chief Gary MacNamara says the FBI is working with detectives to track down the source of the call that triggered the scare, which prompted to a townwide emergency response.
MacNamara says using FBI resources may prove crucial to deciphering the technology the suspect used.
He says the suspect used the Internet to make the calls and was able to hide the IP address.
"The individual who did this, based on the Internet, could be a block from here or could be half a world away from here," MacNamara says.
MacNamara says whoever is behind the threats potentially faces serious state and federal charges, depending on where threats originated from.
