With two snowstorms hitting Connecticut less than a week apart, a Fairfield urgent care blames the snow and ice for more recent slipping and falling accidents.
Fairfield Urgent Care Center says that it's snowy sidewalks that you should watch out for because you may not be able to see the sheet of black ice underneath. It says it usually sees an uptick in weather-related injuries this time of year.
Dr. Kyle Custis, who has worked at the urgent care for about eight years, says the most common injury they see related to icy conditions are fractures, especially wrists in people who were trying to break their fall.
He says if you have to go outside, wear appropriate shoes and take small short steps.
Dr. Mark Wilchinsky, an orthopedic surgeon with Hartford Healthcare, says one of the most common weather-related injuries is wrist fractures. He says you don't want to break your fall - you want to stop your fall from breaking something.
Elderly people have to be more careful since they are at an increased risk of fracture with their thinner bones. Custis says take extra precautions if you are walking your dog or taking out the trash.
The urgent care says it's prepared but is also urging people to stay home if they can. Salting your driveway can help prevent injuries.
