The Fairfield-based Save the Children organization has response teams on the ground in Texas to help out as floodwaters from Hurricane Harvey continue to put millions at risk.
Officials say they have set up family evacuation centers in San Antonio and Austin, Texas. They equipped the facilities with cribs, diapers and play spaces.
It took one family two days to escape the devastation in Houston with their twin 1-year-olds, says Wendy Christian, of Save the Children.
Officials say that there were nearly 3 million children in the flood zone when the hurricane first hit. Families have since been arriving at shelters physically and emotionally drained.
Save the Children worker Sarita Fritzler told News 12 via Skype that families are arriving by the busload with small bags of personal items or nothing at all.
"These families have gone through a lot in the last couple days," she said. "They've gone through water rescues, left their homes, their cars -- they do not know what their future holds for them."
Authorities say they expect the number of evacuees needing shelter to grow to at least 30,000.
