The family of a terminally ill Bridgeport woman is asking for the public's assistance to grant her a simple wish.
Aisha Sewell, 45, suffers from a terminal heart condition called an advanced aortic dissection and doctors say she has five months to live.
Sewell told News 12 Connecticut on Saturday she is being forced out of the nursing home she currently lives at.
"You know, they feel that there is nothing else they can do for me," Sewell said. "They are not treating me for a wound. I'm not able to do more than three days of physical therapy, so Medicare won't cover it. So they're now charging me $680 a day to be here, and I don't have that at all."
Sewell is unable to stay with her family in their apartment because the building has no elevator and she can only be moved by stretcher. She does not have anywhere to go and does not have housing assistance.
"I want to remember my days happy, not being stuck in one room, looking at the same four walls, miserable,” she said.
Denise Taylor-Moye, Sewell's relative, hopes the community can help Sewell raise enough money to get her a handicapped-accessible first-floor apartment so she can be at home surrounded by family.
"It saddens my heart. It brings tears to my eyes every time when I think about it, just knowing the type of individual that she is,” Taylor-Moye said.
State and local leaders have expressed support for Sewell and pledge to help her along with others in her position.
"Aisha needs and deserves this care because the federal government is failing to provide it because of a gap in the Medicare Law,” said Sen. Richard Blumenthal.
