It was a tight race in the Bridgeport mayoral Democratic primary, but state Sen. Bill Finch declared victory late Tuesday.
The election pitted state Rep. Chris Caruso against Finch. Unofficial numbers showed Finch leading by 51 percent when he declared victory. However, those votes do not include about 400 absentee ballots. Caruso did not concede after Finch?s victory speech. He said there were voting irregularities and that he will challenge the results.
As Bridgeport residents reported to vote, state Rep. Caruso spent the day stopping by polling stations to ask residents to "vote for change on Line B." Caruso said Finch is a part of Bridgeport's Democratic "political machine."
Finch also spent the day campaigning. He spent the afternoon shaking hands outside John Winthrop School in Bridgeport's 134th District.
The winner of the Democratic primary will face off against Republican Michael Garrett in November. They will be vying to replace Bridgeport Mayor John Fabrizi.
