Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch said Wednesday that "a mistake was made" when the secretary of the state determined this week that his name could not appear on the ballot for the mayoral race in November's general election.

Attorneys for the re-election campaign of Mayor Finch says that when the secretary of the state's office determined on Monday that Finch had not filed paperwork in time to get on the ballot, that office was looking at the wrong statute. The campaign says it will file paperwork Friday to fix the problem.

A spokesman for the secretary of the state's office said Wednesday that they will not be making a comment.

Joe Ganim, who beat Finch in the Democratic primary, says this last-minute legal maneuvering is nonsense.

"It's obviously desperation," says Ganim. "It's not something I'm looking at at all. I'm out talking to voters and moving forward with our agenda."

Finch believes the confusion will be cleared up by the end of the week and that his name will appear on the ballot after all.
