A fire erupted on the third floor of a Gouverneur Avenue building Friday night, destroying four apartments and displacing residents in an additional five units.
The man who lived in the apartment where the fire started asked his neighbors for forgiveness, according to Virginia Sacarra, who resided directly next door to where the flames erupted.
She says the man told her and other neighbors that he sprayed an unidentified aerosol in the kitchen while he was cooking, and it exploded.
Investigators blame the fire on cooking without working smoke alarms.
Nearly a dozen families are left homeless.
The fire injured 11 people, two in critical condition, two with serious but non life threatening injuries and others treated for minor injuries.
